Hospital Announces Interim President and CEO
Stephen R. Laverty will oversee hospital operations as
search continues for permanent top executive
WATERBURY
–
Waterbury Hospital today announced that Stephen R.
Laverty has been named Interim President and CEO of both
the hospital and its network of affiliates as the search
continues for a new permanent top executive.
The Board of Directors of
the Waterbury Hospital Health Network has been
conducting an extensive search to replace outgoing
President and CEO John Tobin, whose retirement is
effective as of December 31. Tobin announced his
departure in April after 35 years of service – 24 as top
executive. Because the date of Tobin’s retirement is
drawing near, the Board decided to seek out an Interim
President and CEO to continue overseeing hospital
operations while the search continues for a permanent
top executive. This will enable the search to continue
in a thoughtful and careful manner.
With that in mind, the
Board today announced that it has appointed Laverty to
assume the role of Interim President and CEO effective
January 3. Laverty will be charged with all the
responsibilities and authority of the positions, working
closely with the Board to ensure that the hospital
continues to meet its mission of providing a full range
of high quality health care services to the region.
Laverty, 57, comes to
Waterbury Hospital with extensive experience as a health
care leader, having served as President and CEO of both
Northeast Health System, Inc. and Children's Hospital
Boston. Laverty's entire professional career has been
as a hospital executive, having served as Chief
Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and President
and Chief Executive Officer in various institutions
during his career.
“We are confident that the
appointment of Mr. Laverty as Interim President and CEO
will ensure that Waterbury Hospital and its affiliates
continue to provide the highest quality health care to
the people of Greater Waterbury,” said Carl Contadini,
Board Vice Chairman. “The search we are conducting is
extremely important to the hospital’s future and the
crucial role it plays in the community, which is why we
are taking great care throughout this process.”
The search process has
been conducted by Phillips DiPisa of Boston, a national
health care executive search firm. Over 200 candidates
have been screened and vetted, and a special search
committee appointed by the hospital board has narrowed
the field down to a small pool of candidates, Contadini
said.
“We feel we are
approaching the end of the process,” he said. |
